If I wanted to go to a junkyard, rip an engine from a car....

Which car should I look for? I was hoping to learn to rebuild an LS based engine, because of the amount of parts available. However, if I pull one from a truck, say a Vortec V8, i'd be able to take it apart, and replace stuff with LS parts right? because they're based off the same platform and block?

I'm not too good with this., but this winter, I hope to get some reading material to learn what each part of an engine does, and eventually this summer, (if I cant find a project car), go to a junkyard and rip an engine out and restore it.

An LQx engine is easier to convert into an LSx engine than a Vortec V8, and also fairly common in the US.

Someone here did a write-up about doing that exact thing - finding a junkyard truck Vortec and hopping it up into a nice project engine. 'Twas a really good article, too, with lots of good info on what to look for. I can't remember who wrote it, but I'm 95% sure that I saw it here on Oppo.

There was a full how-to on this not that long ago, can't remember if it was here or jalopnik proper, the only difference was the block was a different material. And the focus of three article was that it was almost cost neutral, selling off truck parts for proper heads, etc.

'99 and newer GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado V8 1/2 ton pickups all have LS motors (even if they call them Vortec).

Yep. A van if I remember correctly. All about "on a budget".

Digging...

5.3s are all over the place for basically nothing. They go for $500 in good condition. You don't have to do any ripping; most engines are already ripped out and ready to go for you.

Some Ford vans (e250 and above) have the Triton 6.8L V10. Not a whole lot of aftermarket options as the 5.0 or 5.4. But stock is has some good torque numbers.

Cool to see my post mentioned. I will add that if you are looking at junkyard engines to look for Trailblazer/Envoy/Ascender/Rainier 5.3L as they are priced like other truck engines but are all aluminum. I see a bunch for $450-550 around my area. Also avoid the early LQ4 6.0L engines up to 02 as they had iron heads

It was not only a great article you wrote, but also a great idea. Cheers!

Be sure to post the extra info you just replied with to Turbosloth too.

this helps if you don't want to rummage around a junkyard.
